The Tibet train, also known as Lhasa Express or Sky train to Tibet, is the only train to Lhasa on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. In the train, it is equipped with compartment with sleeper Berths, seats, dining car, toilet, oxygen supply system, etc.
1. Compartment with Sleeper Berths
On the Tibet train, there are two kinds of carriages, one is soft sleeper and another is hard sleeper.
In a soft sleeper carriage, there are 8 compartments with 4 sleeper berths in it. In a soft sleeper compartment, there are a small table, a heat-retaining vacuum flask, and a trash can. Under the table is a plug to get power supply. There is also a small TV fixed on the door near the aisle. Close to the window, there is an outlet of oxygen.
While in a hard sleeper carriage, there are 11 compartments with 6 sleeper berths in it. In a hard sleeper compartment, there are some other friendly facilities – a small table, a thermos, a dustbin.
On a Tibet train, there are usually 4 carriages with total amount of 392 hard seats. The hard seats are connected by row with an unit of 10 seats face to face, and separated by a narrow aisle.
3. Dinning Carriage
There is a dining carriage in the middle position of the train which offers breakfast, lunch and dinner and some snacks. Only some Chinese food and cuisines are provide: rice, vegetables, meals and soups. You can also buy the packed food from the food trolley. Hot water is provided all the time.
4. Luggage Storage
You can put your luggage or suitcases on the luggage closet above the door, under the lower berths or under the table in each soft or hard sleeper compartment.
5. Toilet and Washbasin
There are two toilets at two ends of each carriage on the Tibet train. The toilets in soft sleeper carriages are one western-style toilet and another squat toilet. While in the carriages of hard sleepers and hard seats, there are only squat toilets available. Bring toilet paper on your own because it is not provided in the toilet. There is a simple washbasin at each side of the carriages. Only cold water is provided, undrinkable.
Please note that all the toilets will be closed when the train stop at the stations.
6. Electricity Charging Sockets
The Tibet trains offer power charging. There are power charging sockets in each carriage of hard seats, hard sleepers and soft sleepers. But the amount of the sockets is limited.
The soft sleeper carriage offers a charging socket in each compartment which is under the small table. The aisle in the carriage also has several charging sockets, under the small folded tables. In hard sleeper and hard seat carriages, the charging socket is only equipped by the side of the aisle. All the power charging sockets are the standard 220V. In case of not suiting your devices well, you’d better bring an adapter.
7. Air Conditioning and Oxygen Supply
There is an air-conditioning system on the train to create an comfortable temperature and ensure a clean and fresh air.
There are also two kinds of oxygen supply systems equipped on the train. One is a ‘dispersion-mode’ oxygen supply system, which spreading oxygen in the train’s carriages through the air-con system. The other system can be used by passengers directly through independent port.
