    Trip Notes

    1. What travel documents are required to board on Tibet train?

According to the Tibet Tourism Bureau, overseas travelers can only enter Tibet as part of a pre-arranged guided tour with a licensed local agency like us.

To board the Chengdu Tibet train to Lhasa, you must present a Tibet Travel Permit obtained through your travel agency, along with a valid passport and train ticket. By arranging these for you, we make your Tibet journey smooth and hassle-free.

    2. How to apply for Tibet Travel Permit? How long does it take?

Foreign tourists applying for a Tibet Travel Permit must provide a photo or photocopy of a valid passport and Chinese Visa. Holders of a work visa must also provide a work certificate, while holders of a student visa must provide a student certificate. Processing the Tibet Travel Permit usually takes 7-14 working days. Once it is successfully issued, we will mail it to your address in Chinese Mainland 3-5 days before your departure, ensuring you receive it before boarding your train to Tibet.

    3. How long in advance should I arrive at the train station?

The Tibet train is usually crowded, and foreign travelers must present their Tibet Travel Permit, passport, and train ticket for security checks, which may take extra time. To ensure a smooth departure, it is recommended to arrive at the station at least 1 hour before the train departs.

    4. How to book Tibet train tickets during the peak travel season?

Major traditional Chinese festivals and summer vacations are the peak travel season. Tickets for popular train routes, such as Beijing-Lhasa and Chengdu-Lhasa, can be very difficult to book. Therefore, a good solution is to combine flight and train travel. For example, you could fly to Xining from another Chinese city. As the starting point of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, all trains into Tibet stop there, giving you a better chance of securing tickets. This is a very flexible and feasible way to travel to Tibet during the peak travel season.

    5. What to eat during the Tibet train trip?

During the Tibet train journey, you can enjoy a variety of food options. A food trolley circulates through the carriages offering snacks, instant noodles, boxed meals, and soft drinks, while the dining car serves freshly prepared Chinese dishes. You can also bring your own food, making it easy and convenient to stay fueled while taking in the stunning scenery along the route.

    6. What to do if I experience altitude sickness on the Tibet train?

As the world's highest train, the Tibet train features an advanced oxygen system to ensure passenger comfort. When traveling toward Golmud, the train staff activate the onboard oxygen supply to maintain safe oxygen levels inside the carriages, protecting you from the thin air and harsh climate of the plateau. Additionally, each seat or berth is equipped with a personal oxygen outlet, allowing you to easily use supplemental oxygen to relieve symptoms of altitude sickness such as headache, dizziness, fatigue, or nausea. If your symptoms persist, you can inform the train staff, who can provide medical assistance.

    7. What can I expect to see on the train journey from Chengdu to Lhasa?

The highlights of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway journey are concentrated on the Xining to Lhasa section. Departing from Xining, the train passes Qinghai Lake, China's largest saltwater lake, crosses the vast Qaidam Basin, and ascends over the Kunlun Mountains at 4,767m. Along the way, you may spot wildlife such as Tibetan antelopes in the Hoh Xil Nature Reserve. Continuing onward, the train reaches the highest point of the journey-Tanggula Pass (5,072m), then gradually descends as the vast Qiangtang and Nagqu Grasslands unfold. Before the legendary city of Lhasa comes into view, you will be treated with the breathtaking scenery across the Tibetan Plateau.

    8. What's the best time to visit EBC by Tibet train?

The prime time to visit Everest Base Camp is from April to June and September to November, when the weather is stable, skies are clear, and the Himalayas are at their most spectacular. Taking the Tibet train during these months not only offers stunning plateau scenery but also helps your body acclimate gradually to the high altitude. In winter (December to March), visibility of Everest is excellent, and soft sleeper train tickets are easier to secure, making it a convenient and budget-friendly alternative.
