    Trip Notes

    1. What travel documents are required to visit Mount Kailash in Tibet?

When traveling to Mount Kailash in Tibet, different types of tourists are required to carry specific travel documents:
    1. Foreign tourists: Passport, Chinese Visa, Tibet Travel Permit, Aliens' Travel Permit, and Military Area Entry Permit
    2. Tourists from Hong Kong and Macau: Home Return Permit and Border Permit.
    3. Tourists from Taiwan: Taiwan Compatriot Permit, Tibet Travel Permit, Border Permit, and Military Area Entry Permit.

    2. How to apply for Tibet Travel Permit? How long does it take?

Foreign travelers applying for a Tibet Travel Permit need to submit a photo or a photocopy of a valid passport along with a Chinese Visa. Those holding a work visa are also required to provide a work certificate, while student visa holders must submit a student certificate.

For tourists from Taiwan, only a photo or photocopy of Taiwan Compatriot Permit is needed. The processing of the Tibet Travel Permit generally takes 7-14 working days. Once issued, we will mail it to your Chinese Mainland address 3-5 days before your departure, ensuring you receive it in time for your train or flight to Tibet.

    3. When is the best time to visit Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar in Tibet?

Mount Kailash can be visited any time of the year except winter (November to March). The best periods to go are from April to June and from September to October, when the weather is comfortably warm and the landscapes are most enchanting.

If you want to experience the rich festival culture of Mount Kailash, time your visit with Saga Dawa Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the fourth month in the Tibetan calendar. This festival celebrates the birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana of Buddha Shakyamuni. While the festival is observed throughout Tibet, the celebrations near the foot of Mount Kailash are considered the most iconic. Additionally, the Kailash Saga Dawa Festival 2026 will start on May 31. To enjoy the full spiritual and cultural experience, it is advisable to book your trip well in advance.

    4. How many days for Kailash Kora?

Under normal conditions, completing the Mount Kailash Kora usually takes three days.

Day 1: Darchen to Dirapuk Monastery (14km)
Day 2: Dirapuk Monastery to Zutulpuk Monastery (24km)
Day 3: Zutulpuk Monastery to Darchen(6km)

Among the three days, the second day is considered the most strenuous. You'll cross Dolma La Pass (5,630m), the highest point of the entire trek, which is a physically and spiritually significant challenge.

    5. Where to stay in Lhasa to Mount Kailash tour?

In cities like Lhasa and Shigatse, a wide range of accommodations is available, from luxurious hotels to budget-friendly guesthouses, allowing you to choose according to your preferences and budget. In Saga and Darchen, lodging is more basic.

During the 3-day Mount Kailash trek, you will stay in guesthouses at various monasteries along the route. These guesthouses are relatively simple, typically offering 3-4 bedrooms with shared bathrooms on the same floor. Moreover, shower facilities may not be available, so it is recommended to bring wet wipes for basic hygiene needs.

    6. What to eat during the Mount Kailash Kora?

Along the trek, you will find open-air tented restaurants and monastery dining halls serving simple meals such as fried noodles and fried rice. These stops also provide hot water, sweet tea, butter tea, and instant noodles. In addition, supply shops at rest points offer snacks, such as biscuits, sausages, bottled drinks, beer, and instant milk tea.

    7. What is the age limit for Kailash Kora?

There is no strict age limit to join a Kailash Kora. However, since Mount Kailash height is around 6,638 meters and the pilgrimage requires trekking, the journey can be quite challenging. It is generally recommended for participants who are in good health and have a reasonable level of physical fitness. Elderly individuals or those with health concerns should consult a doctor before undertaking the trip.

    8. What should I pack for a Mount Kailash tour?

For a Mount Kailash tour, it's essential to pack carefully due to the high altitude and remote conditions. Warm layered clothing, a down jacket, comfortable trekking shoes, gloves, and hats are needed to handle the cold and unpredictable weather. Sunscreen, sunglasses, lip balm, and personal medications are also important to protect yourself and stay healthy throughout the journey.

In addition, practical items such as a reusable water bottle, snacks, and energy bars will help maintain energy during the trek. A sleeping bag, flashlight, power bank, and basic toiletries are also recommended to ensure comfort and convenience. Most importantly, pack light but ensure you have everything needed for both comfort and safety during the journey.
