    Trip Notes

    1. What travel documents are required to visit Kailash in Tibet?

When traveling to Mount Kailash in Tibet, different types of tourists are required to carry specific travel documents:
    1. Foreign tourists: Passport, Chinese Visa, Tibet Travel Permit, Aliens' Travel Permit, and Military Area Entry Permit.
    2. Tourists from Hong Kong and Macau: Home Return Permit and Border Permit.
    3. Tourists from Taiwan: Taiwan Compatriot Permit, Tibet Travel Permit, Border Permit, and Military Area Entry Permit.

    2. How to apply for Tibet Travel Permit? How long does it take?

Foreign travelers applying for a Tibet Travel Permit must provide a photo or photocopy of a valid passport along with a Chinese Visa. Travelers holding a work visa also need to submit a work certificate, while those on a student visa must provide a student certificate. For tourists from Taiwan, only a photo or photocopy of Taiwan Compatriot Permit is required. The processing of the Tibet Travel Permit usually takes 7-14 working days.

Once your permit is issued, we will mail it to your Chinese Mainland address 3-5 days before your departure, ensuring you receive it in time for your train or flight to Tibet.

    3. When is the best time to visit Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar in Tibet?

Mount Kailash is accessible throughout the year, except the winter months from November to March. The ideal periods to visit are from April to June and September to October, when the weather is mild and the scenery most captivating.

For travelers want to experience Mount Kailash’s vibrant festival culture, the Saga Dawa Festival is the perfect time to visit. Celebrated on the 15th day of the fourth month in the Tibetan calendar, the festival commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana of Buddha Shakyamuni. While observed across Tibet, the festivities near Mount Kailash are particularly remarkable. The Kailash Saga Dawa Festival 2026 will begin on May 31. To make the most of this spiritual and cultural journey, early booking is highly recommended.

    4. Is the Mount Kailash trek very challenging? How many days for Kailash Kora?

The Mount Kailash trek can be moderately to highly challenging due to the high altitude (4,500-5,600 m), long daily walking distances, and rugged terrain. Altitude-related issues such as fatigue, shortness of breath, or mild sickness are common, so proper acclimatization, a steady pace, and good hydration are essential.

The full Kailash Kora (circumambulation) typically takes 3 days. Day 1 usually goes from Darchen to Dirapuk Monastery, Day 2 crosses Dolma La Pass and descends to Zutulpuk Monastery, and Day 3 completes the trek back to Darchen. For those who find hiking more challenging, it is sometimes possible to travel part of the way, ride a horse, or hire a porter to carry your luggage.

    5. Where to stay during the Mount Kailash Kora?

During the 3-day Mount Kailash trek, you will stay in guesthouses at monasteries along the route. These accommodations are relatively simple, usually with 3-4 bedrooms sharing bathrooms on the same floor. Shower facilities may not be available, so it’s recommended to bring wet wipes for basic hygiene needs.

    6. What to eat during the Mount Kailash Kora?

Along the trekking route, you will come across open-air tented restaurants and monastery dining halls offering simple meals like fried noodles and fried rice. These stops also provide hot water, sweet tea, butter tea, and instant noodles. Additionally, supply points along the way sell snacks such as biscuits, sausages, bottled beverages, beer, and instant milk tea.

    7. How far in advance should I book a 15-day Mount Kailash tour?

For a smooth and hassle-free trip, it is recommended to book at least 15-20 days in advance. Booking 1-2 months or even earlier is also possible. Early reservations help secure accommodations, transportation, and guides, may offer certain discounts, and allow sufficient time to obtain essential permits such as the Tibet Travel Permit, ensuring a comfortable and well-organized journey.

    8. If I hold an Indian passport, can I visit Mount Kailash?

Indian passport holders who wish to visit Mount Kailash must join a yatra organized by the Foreign Affairs Office of the Tibet Autonomous Region and the Tibet-India Pilgrim Reception Center. As a partner of the Pilgrimage Center, we can help you arrange a Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. For more detailed information, please contact us.
