    Trip Notes

    1. Can I book Tibet train tickets online?

Technically, you can purchase Tibet train tickets by yourself through the official China Railway English website (12306) or via Trip.com. But Tibet train tickets are limited, and foreign travelers cannot board a train or flight to Lhasa without a Tibet Travel Permit, which can only be obtained through a licensed local agency. The easiest and most secure approach is to book your Tibet tour with us, and we will handle your Tibet Travel Permit and train ticket.

    2. How to get the train ticket after booking with us?

After we have successfully booked your train ticket, we will notify you in time. We will also send the train ticket to your hotel after you arrive in Chinese Mainland to ensure that you can board the train to Tibet smoothly.

    3. What travel documents are required for a Tibet train trip?

According to the Tibet Tourism Bureau's policy, overseas tourists can only travel to Tibet through guided tours arranged by local Tibetan travel agencies like us.

You must present a Tibet Travel Permit, a valid passport, and a Tibet train ticket to board the Tibet train to Lhasa. In addition to the Tibet Travel Permit, certain areas in Tibet require specific documents, such as Aliens' Travel Permit and Military Area Entry Permit.

    4. Is it safe to take a Tibet train to Lhasa?

Traveling to Tibet by train is very safe. The train staff will patrol the carriages for security checks and offer help to passengers in need.

Additionally, the train is equipped with a sealed cabin and two onboard oxygen systems. This helps maintain passenger comfort as the train climbs to high altitudes, reducing the risk of headaches or dizziness often caused by altitude changes.

    5. How to prevent altitude sickness on Tibet train?

The beginning of Tibet train journey is usually comfortable, as the altitude is still low. The altitude gradually ascends when the train leaves Xining, especially when passing Tanggula Pass (5,072m). The train's oxygen supply system automatically activates after Golmud. Stay calm, drink plenty of water, and take it easy.

Mild symptoms of altitude sickness such as headaches, dizziness, or shortness of breath are normal. If needed, you can request an oxygen tube from the train staff and connect it to the oxygen outlet. At the same time, avoid overeating and be careful to stay warm to prevent catching a cold.

    6. How long in advance should I book a Tibet train trip?

To ensure a smooth Tibet train journey, it is recommended to book at least 1-2 months in advance. Train tickets to Tibet are especially in high demand from May to October, and your Tibet Travel Permit needs time to process. Booking early not only allows enough time to arrange permits and purchase tickets but also enjoy certain discounts, making your entire trip more convenient and worry-free.

    7. What to eat on Tibet train?

You can enjoy traditional Chinese meals on Tibet train. During meal times, the train staff will push a food trolley with soft drinks, boxed meals, instant noodles, and snacks to carriages for purchase. If you prefer a more formal dining experience, you can go to the dining carriage, where the chef prepares freshly cooked Chinese dishes. Prices typically range from $2-7 per dish.

    8. When is the best time to take Tibet train and visit Mount Kailash?

The ideal time to take the Tibet train and visit Mount Kailash is from April to October, when the scenery along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway is at its most spectacular - vast grasslands, snow-capped peaks, and crystal-clear lakes. At the same time, Mount Kailash offers mild weather, clear skies, and great visibility for trekking and completing the sacred kora.
